Yesterday I touched upon the issues posed by rogue registry cleaners but I wonder why are they so effective? The most obvious answer to that question, perhaps, is that such programs have evolved into extremely professional looking software. A well written rogue registry cleaner will be able to imitate Microsoft Windows warnings and alert screens so well that the typical user would not know that the product wasn’t what it was cracked up to be.

Internet security vendor McAfee has catalogued more than 1.2 million unique samples of malware in the first half of 2009, meaning that this year is well on course to smash last year’s record in malware creation. In the first half of 2008 McAfee identified around half a million unique pieces of malware whilst the second half of 2008 saw one million new incidents, giving a total of around 1.5 million unique pieces of malware for the whole of 2008. According to Dave Marcus, Director of Security Research and Communications at McAfee – “In the first half of 2009, we have seen about three times the unique malware discovered in the same period in 2008

Do we ever really know what we are eating? This following email hoax cruelly suggests that Kentucky Fried Chicken changed the way they are known to ‘KFC’ because they don’t actually use chickens in their food! KFC has been a part of our American traditions for many years. Many people, day in and day out, eat at KFC religiously. Do they really know what they are eating? During a recent study of KFC done at the University of New Hampshire, they found some very upsetting facts.

According to security experts, keystroke loggers may pose a larger risk to the average PC user than any other type of online attack or malicious piece of code. Keystroke loggers, also known as keyloggers ,  are typically very tiny programs or, on rare occasions, pieces of hardware that can monitor and record every key that you press on your keyboard. That means every key, including the delete button, spaces and even the enter key

An unfortunately high number of people around the world are in the unenviable position of being out of work due to the current economic crisis. For the dishonest such a situation can be a golden opportunity as they find it relatively easy to part the desperate from their money at a time when they can least afford it. Job scams have been around for ever it seems but right now they are probably far more common than ever before. With that in mind, here are 13 signs that tell you that job may be a scam – 1. The job offers unusually high pay for apparently little work 2

Hopefully you read my recent post that explained exactly what cyberbullying is. But… Do you know how to identify whether your child is being cyberbullied? Spotting the tell-tale signs is, in my opinion, essential especially since the Megan Meier case. Many of the warning signs associated with cyberbullying are similar to the ones you would see if your child was being bullied in real life, such as in school for example. For instance – Their school grades have dropped They suddenly start failing tests that you know they should have passed They seem preoccupied or bothered about something Their sleep pattern becomes different – either sleeping too long or nowhere near enough They become irritable or are quick to anger They exhibit signs of insecurity in place of previous confidence – bullying always damages one’s self-esteem Spending far more or less time online may be an indication that they are either reacting to, or avoiding, some sort of issue By keeping track of what your children are doing online, and monitoring their behaviour and moods, you should be able to have a fair chance of spotting if anything is wrong.

The bad guys on the internet are always on the lookout for new and ingenious ways of getting viruses and other malware onto your computer. If you haven’t already heard, a Twitter employee’s email account was hacked yesterday and confidential corporate information became exposed. I don’t know if users login details and passwords were compromised – perhaps someone could let me know if they’ve heard anything about that – but it does pose an interesting question… Do you use the same password for every website that you have to log into? With the rapid increase in social networking sites and other web properties that require registration the need to remember multiple names and passwords can quickly become overwhelming. I have a few friends who ’solved’ that problem by using  just one name and password for every site they visit. Whilst it may save them the hassle of remembering lots of different details it does pose a security risk.

83% of all spam originates from botnet controlled computers according to a recent report from MessageLabs . MessageLabs said that spam vendors continue to send out a huge volume of  junk mail via botnet-infected systems, despite efforts to shut them down. The increased prevalence of botnets and their tendency to be used for spamming purposes would go a long way to explaining why spam still continues to account for over 90% of all email traffic around the world. Of that, 83.2% came via botnets with the single biggest offender being the Cutwail botnet which was responsible for almost half of that figure

In essence cyberbullying is any type of harassment that takes place over the internet, be it on a website or via email or instant message. Cyberbullying has begun to replace traditional forms of harassment. Where kids were beaten up at the bus stop they are now abused on social networking sites instead. Graffiti on the school walls has been replaced by vile and hurtful messages in chat rooms. Fake profiles that paint the victim in an unfavourable light are ever more common.

The vast majority of persons reading this will never receive the benefit of social security for the purpose of retirement-unless certainly serious adjustments are made in the current system. There are simply too a lot of persons living much longer than anticipated. At the same time, regardless of how much you've managed to pay into social security over time it is unsure that anyone could live on the amount of money they would be given in social security benefits even if they had no other considerable bills to pay for example house notes, car notes, or insurance on a home or automobile. It amazes me that my grandparents managed to live on the fairly small sum that was earned from my grandfather's retirement and social security.

PLEASE FORWARD THIS WARNING AMONG FRIENDS, FAMILY AND CONTACTS: You should be alert during the next days: Do not open any message with an attached file called ‘Invitation’ regardless of who sent it, It is a virus that opens an Olympic Torch which ‘burns’ the whole hard disc C of your computer. This virus will be received from someone who has your e-mail address in his/her contact list, that is why you should send this e-mail to all your contacts. It is better to receive this message 25 times than to receive the virus and open it.

While planning your financial retirement there are a lot of things you should think about before taking the plunge and not all of them are overtly financial, though in some large way they are all incredibly financial considerations, particularly if you don't take the time now to think about their importance later. Insurance is an significant consideration when it comes to retirement. Depending on your age at retirement you may or may not meet the requirements for Medicaid, which could leave you in a bit of a pickle when it comes to covering the high cost of insuring your health. If you have a spouse that will continue working for a year or two you may want to think about the cost of being added to his or her insurance coverage. Chances are it will be less costly than striking out on your own for health insurance coverage, which tends to boost in cost with age and according to health

We have to look at reality. There have been better times in the past as far as our economy goes, and it is predicted that things are not going to improve neither this year nor the next one. But while the economy is going down, and taking the currency down with it, the value of gold is on the rise, making it a good commodity to trade for profit. If you have managed to build up a comfortable stash of gold coins, you are probably contemplating on selling them for profit. Now is a good time to sell gold coins for profit because the price has gone up; however, the price could continue to rise.

When it comes to investing, whether you are putting aside cash in order to send your children to college or aggressively saving for your final retirement there are many things you should remember when making your investments. Keeping these things in mind will help you take the successes and losses you experience along the way in stride. This is principal as we must keep going and investing if we want to build a solid retirement for ourselves or education for our kids. If we give up and make your mind up to play it safe we are seriously limiting our potential. Scambaiting is all about scamming the scammers. The reasons why people get into doing this are quite varied but generally it is about trying to gain information that can be used to get a scammer prosecuted, getting them to pose for silly photographs, gaining revenge when the scambaiter themself has previously been scammed or wasting a scammer’s time. Though definitely something I would not condone or recommend, it has even been known for scambaiters to extract money from the scammers! Scambaiters employ many different techniques and ruses in order to create havoc for the scammers. These include sending them hundreds of miles to collect ‘wrongly delivered mail’, requiring a small fee in order to release the advance fee the scammer wanted, sending extremely heavy packages of junk for which postage must be paid on collection and requesting huge questionnaires to be filled in. By using anonymous phone number services some scambaiters even get the scammers to call them and then stay on the line for hours, running up huge international phone bills.
